A Memoir
About the Book
Born on Valentine's Day
Barbara Marcus was born on Valentine's Day, 1948, a day symbolizing love, but her childhood was anything but. In this raw and beautifully written memoir, she chronicles a life shaped by abuse, neglect, and a mother's erratic affection.
From early memories of heartbreak and hope in Brooklyn to navigating the emotional wreckage left by a string of father figures, Born on Valentine's Day is a courageous exploration of trauma, resilience, and ultimately, healing.
Told with fierce honesty and subtle humor, Barbara's journey will break your heart and then help you mend it again. It's a memoir for anyone who has ever struggled to feel worthy of love — and for those who know the power of a story well told.

What Readers Are Saying
This is a book you won't want to put down. At her core lies an extraordinary strength and a remarkable ability to see a situation for what it is, focusing forward rather than dwelling on the negative. There were moments that left me breathless, my heart stopping for just a second. And others that made me laugh out loud at her sharp wit and humor.
This book was a revelation to me and I read for the greater part of a day, carrying my kindle from room to room, deeply drawn into it. It is beautifully written in gifted prose. Following reading this book, I felt released from some old situations I never quite grew from.
I didn't want to put it down — I felt the child's fear and the adult's grief, but also the determination to survive. It illustrates that trauma can be acknowledged without defining a life, and that love and resilience can emerge from the darkest situations.
This memoir stayed with me long after I finished it. Barbara Marcus writes with honesty and emotional precision. Some sections were difficult to read because of the subject matter, but that discomfort felt necessary. This is a powerful and important life story.
The author's vulnerability is remarkable, and while the pacing slows slightly in the middle, the emotional payoff toward the end is well worth it. A deeply moving memoir.
